Fukutoku-Jinja Shrine
-
Shrine sitting since the Jogan era (859-876)
-
The chief enshrined deity is ukano mitama no mikoto, the deity of rich harvest. Tokugawa Ieyasu and suceeding shoguns worshipped the deity. When offering prayers at New Year in 1614, Hidetada, the second shogun, is said to have left these words of praise: "Fukutoku is a really auspicious Shingo (title given to a Shinto shrine)." At that time, a new shoot was seen sprouting at one of the shrine gates made of sawtooth oak, which led the shrine to be given the alternative name of Mebuki (sprouting) Shrine.
