Chinowa-kuguri for Oharai (Passing through Chinowa for driving away evil spirits)
-
Chinowa is installed in the shrine site for Oharai rituals in June and December. By passing through Chinowa made with Kaya grass (making an 8-shaped form), it is said to drive away your sins and evils of the past six months. With this ritual, there is also a Katashiro ritual in which you write your name and age on a person-shaped piece of paper and pass your evil spirits onto the paper, and the shinto priest prays and cleanses them away at Oharai.
